The Natural Park of Monte Barro is located in Lecco southwest of the Grigne and nestled between Lake Como, Lake Annone and Lake Garlate.
We can also find the saddle of Galbiate, a limestone relief dolomitic 922 meters high, completely isolated from the surrounding mountains and directly overlooking the plain is a veritable outpost of the Lombard Prealps towards the Po Valley.
The Natural Park of Mount Barro is included in the homonymous Regional Park run by a consortium based in Villa Bertarelli in Galbiate near Lecco.
Thanks to its isolated position from the surrounding mountains it is considered a site of European Community importance for nature conservation.
The mountain suffered fortifications in the Middle Ages and then it was widely modified during the Renaissance and later used for religious purposes. On the whole there is also the chapel of St. Victor and the structures used in the first half of the twentieth century as a sanatorium.
Thanks to a large presence of groundwater numerous streams originate inhabited by numerous invertebrates such as the crayfish, present mainly in the eastern side of the mountain. Diptera, trichoptera and efemerotteri are also present.
Kestrels, buzzards, brown kites, peregrine falcons, royal albanels and imperial crows are just some of the birds that can be seen as they soar in the air taking advantage of the updrafts.
From the botanical point of view the park is an example of natural biodiversity with over 1000 plants in less than 700 hectares; primate difficult to beat in the Lombardy region.
The origins of this biodiversity can be attributed to the different types of environments and the historical origin of the site with rare preglacial species whose presence is due to the forced isolation brought in remote eras from the glaciers.
The Piani di Barra Archaeological Park is another site of the park of particular interest where it is possible to find archaeological remains of late Roman fortifications, later used also by the Ostrogoths at the fall of the Western Roman Empire.
In the Park Center for environmental education, in the Eremo di Monte barro area, there is the main Park Visitor Center with a hostel, bar, restaurant, a teaching room and the Archaeological Museum of the Barro. Numerous archaeological finds discovered in the archaeological excavation campaigns are exhibited to satisfy visitors’ curiosity.
