Traditional Bellano Festival: the Pesa Vegia 5th January
Today, I want to share the unforgettable experience at the Pesa Vegia in Bellano. This celebration, rooted for over four centuries, takes place every January 5th, making it one of the most magical and historically rich nights on Lake Como!
Upon arriving in Bellano, I immediately breathed in the enchanting atmosphere created by the streets of the town transformed into scenes from the 1600s. Hundreds of extras in period costumes brought a unique representation to life.
The legend added an extra layer of fascination. In 1605, when Count Fuentes annulled a reform from 1604, reintroducing old measurement units, Pesa Vegia has kept its tradition alive over the centuries. The procession of the Three Wise Men, the race of the "Pese" through the streets, and the captivating bonfire on the pier made the celebration unforgettable. The Spanish Governor upheld the tradition, reading the ordinance from the balcony of the Town Hall, while the hearts of all attendees beat in unison at the cry of "Pesa Vegia!" The evening reached its climax when, from the shore, the famous call was echoed: "Pesa vegia o Pesa nova?" The answer, a resounding "Pesa Vegia!!," triggered jubilation, and the town poured onto the pier to welcome the messengers of the new ordinance.
In this captivating corner of Lake Como, Pesa Vegia is more than just a celebration; it's a journey through time that unites generations, preserving the history and magic of Bellano.
Participating in this tradition is an experience that remains in the hearts of those fortunate enough to live the magic of Bellano on January 5th.
