Hello everyone! September has arrived and with it the first grey, cool days.
Leo has started middle school and is excited to meet new classmates and new teachers, but the older he gets, the more difficult it becomes to keep him from getting bored on rainy Saturdays, so last week I took him on a tour of the Museo Barca Lariana: The International Museum of Vintage Boats.
The Museum Barca Lariana in Pianello del Lario is housed in an old 19th-century spinning mill... it's practically a museum within a museum!
The collection inside is truly unique, with 400 historical boats of various types: rowing boats, gondolas, fishing boats, sailing boats, and motorboats. We asked for a guided tour and it was very interesting to discover the history of this collection, which was born out of Gian Alberto Zanoletti's great love for navigation and Lake Como.
He, in fact, understood very early the importance of craftsmanship and know-how and wanted to preserve the historical nautical tradition. A real necessity for the area. Thus he began collecting wooden boats of all kinds at an early age.
There are numerous rooms divided according to theme that one after the other show pieces of the history of our Lake Como and its culture. My favourite was definitely the Riva Yacht Collection, dedicated to the very famous collection belonging to the family of boat builders, an icon of quality and Italianism that represents true status.
We loved being able to see the boats up close and breathe in the smell of wood. Leo, who was initially not particularly enthusiastic about visiting a museum, was fascinated by the guide's stories and the many boats in the museum.
If you don't know how to spend a rainy afternoon, I absolutely recommend a visit to the Museum Barca Lariana... you won't regret it!
