Near Dervio, perched on the Lecco shore of Lake Como, the ancient medieval village of Corenno Plinio dives into the lake with its stone walls, which once had the task of protecting the population from enemy attacks. A couple of days ago, I went to this magical village with my cousin, who had never seen it.
Coming from the main road you will find the square with the Church of St Thomas of Canterbury and next to it the castle built during the 14th Century by the Andreani family, who obtained Corenno as a feud at the time.
The towers to the north and south are still visible, once useful to check the horizon: when invaders arrived from the lake, the population refuged inside the walls.
I suggest you visit this small village without a map. Try to follow the steep stairways and cobbled alleys and find out where they can lead you. There is also a panoramic terrace near the castle, that shows you the wonderful landscape all the way to the top of lake como.
In this place lost in time, you won’t find the souvenir shops of Bellagio, nor the exclusive boutiques of Menaggio or the crowded restaurants of Varenna, but you will experience a very special atmosphere.
In the shadow of the centuries-old stone walls, walking along streets once traveled by our ancestors, you will explore a piece of Lake Como’s history that few people know about.
Have I intrigued you? If you need more information on how to reach this suggestive corner of Lake Como, you can find me as usual at the Reception!
