October on Lake Como: the month of chestnuts!
I really can’t hide my love for summer: the sunshine, the outdoor activities, and the beach days.
But I confess that Autumn also is kinda charming to me. I love on sunny days walking through the woods with my little dog, hearing the colourful leaves crunching under my feet. But there is one thing I love even more about Autumn: Chestnuts Parties!
There are a lot of Pro Loco groups in North Lake Como and in other zones that organise chestnut parties on autumn Sundays. Everyone gets his or her portion of roast chestnuts and then everyone eats together enjoying the taste of time spent with friends. Here in Vercana, just a stone's throw from the Residence, we had our own Chestnut Party a few weeks ago too and it was really successful! A great opportunity for locals to rediscover community spirit and a great chance for people from other countries to get to know new places, traditions, and people.
In addition to participating in these events, if you don't know what to do to entertain your children over the weekend, there is no better time than now to go chestnut hunting, combining the pleasure of the contact with nature with the pleasure of the palate, which is always much appreciated here! In the area, chestnuts are used in a truly versatile way, cooked roasted or stewed as a tasty after-dinner dessert, perhaps accompanied by chocolate or a good glass of wine... I bet your mouth is already watering! Or dried and soaked in milk as a traditional recipe of these places dictates, or turned into flour used to make sweet and savoury dishes such as chestnut cakes or pasta, perhaps dressed with a good mushroom sauce.
