Visit Lake Como: Villa del Balbianello
Hello everyone!
Easter holidays started officially the new season and a lot of guests are already sunbathing and relaxing here at Il Giardino di Lory.
Like every year, I am ready to give you advice on places to visit during your holiday on Lake Como.
You can find me at the reception… downstairs in the laundry …in the tool shed…in fact, wherever there is something to do! Or here on the blog, where today I am going to tell you about one of the jewels of Lake Como: Villa Balbianello.
Villa Balbianello is a wonderful historical residence dating back to the end of 18th century, ready to welcome you among its well-kept gardens and finely furnished rooms which have hosted important personalities such as Alessandro Manzoni, Giovanni Berchet and Giuseppe Giusti up to Daniel Craig in Casino Royale and Natalie Portman in Star Wars episode II.
Villa Balbianello is located on a small tongue of land jutting out into the lake, offering an astonishing view from different perspectives.
Cardinale Angelo Maria Durini wanted it to be built in 1787, as he desired a new home for his leisure right in this area of the lake. Then, in the 20th century, the propriety passed to Guido Monzino: the first Italian to climb Mount Everest! On the second floor of the villa, you can see the memorabilia he collected on his adventure trips all around the world. In the 1980s, Monzino left the villa to the Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which takes care of it today.
The gardens and interiors of this villa surprise me every time with the attention to detail they present and the atmosphere they create with their surroundings. Although, the guided tours are very interesting and help you immerse in the history of this treasure on Lake Como.
