Visit Lake Como: Villa Erba
Villa Erba, in Cernobbio, is one of the most important 19th-century villas in Italy. It was built as a summer residence for the Erba family, and during the years, it housed many artists, becoming the fulcrum of the cultural and social life of the time. In the last century, the villa became also the summer residence of the great film director Luchino Visconti, who in his last years, came back to the villa to finish the editing of his movie “Ludwig”. The rooms of Luchino Visconti are still visible today as part of a museum dedicated to him. Villa Erba was later acquired by a public consortium, which built there a modern glass-and-iron exhibition and congress centre, consisting of a round pavilion and three wings. The central pavilion is one of the most prestigious and well-equipped structures in Italy for the organization of major events. The villa and the congress centre are rounded by a wonderful historical park, listed in the Grandi Giardini Italiani network. In the park you can admire majestic centuries-old trees and lush water gardens. The areas of Villa Erba, together with those of the near Villa d’Este, host the famous Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este during the spring season.
