Villa Bernasconi is one of the most representative villas of the art nouveau architecture in the Como-lands. Located in the municipality of Cernobbio on the western shore of the Lario with a largely mountainous area with narrow, winding but panoramic roads.
Villa Bernasconi was built for industrial Davide Bernasconi and built to the limits of the industrial area Bernasconi; It responds to the model of the isolated cottage with a lookout tower that gives momentum to the structure. The articulation of the building and its rich lively decorative kit with a large amount of elegant and up to date decorations that radically transpose the basic volumes.
Silk worms and butterflies, modeled in concrete, are placed in the center of the decorations as if they were a noble coat of arms, accompanied by ceramic friezes and brick strips. The great wealth and the compositional happiness of the wrought iron balustrades and the internal staircase make the building vibrant, which in its vision is stimulating and evocative. Ernesto Mazzucotelli, a blacksmith and artist of Milan’s liberty style, gave one of his best performances with an extraordinary blend of bold abstract motifs and naturalistic inserts. Interior walls and ceilings are often painted, depicting details on curved walls and an asymmetrical arrangement of distribution elements. The staircase stands out for its grid to the turret.
The villa was also home to the finance guard, until it was bought in 1989 by the Commune of Cernobbio, which restored only in 2005, intervening in the basement and raised floors. The municipality used it as the temporary headquarters of some municipal offices and, lately, as a venue for hosting cultural events or prestigious temporary exhibitions.
In order to return to the original splendor, the villa still needs numerous restoration works and the putting into the norms of the penthouse, the attic and the belvedere tower, in addition to the enhancement of the park through the upgrading of the existing landscaping garden.
