Orrido di Bellano – Visit Lake Como
In the commune of Bellano, on the eastern shore of Lake Como, you can enjoy one of the most beautiful and unique natural wonders of Lake Como.
The Orrido di Bellano is a natural canyon, carved by the torrent Pioverna 15 million years ago.
The unique nature of the Orrido made it an important site since ancient times: its waterfalls were used to power iron working machines in the 15th century, and have been used in recent times for the creation of hydroelectric power.
Several legends surround this unique site, like those about “Ca’ del Diavol” (The House of the Devil), a house located at the entrance of the Orrido, originally built as a observation point on the lake, and which is said to have been hosting satanic rituals in the past. Or the legend of the great warrior Taino, who is said to have been buried together with his treasure in a hidden hollow of the Orrido.
Today, the Orrido di Bellano is a unique tourist attraction: you can walk through it on suspended walkways extending into the gorge, and enjoy an amazing and memorable view on this natural wonder.
