On the bottom of the Val d’Esino, above the town of Varenna, stands a promontory, dominated by the Castle of Vezio.
Among the various fractions that make up the town of Perledo, that is one of the most interesting maintaining the ancient characteristics of a time. The original settlement is thought to be ligure celtic-if not even Etruscan, but subsequently subjected to various migratory flows of the peoples of the north. Extended their dominion in Lombardy The Romans found themselves having to cope with the incursions of the peoples of the Alpine peoples until the final defeat by Ottaviano, in 27 BC
to Vezio was erected a fortification to facilitate control of Via Riviera and the banks below the lake on which the promontory was sort Varenna, an important place of commercial and military of the area.
It is believed that originally the perimeter of the castle was much broader and encompassed therein also the houses and the stores, foundations that are still visible today.
What remains of this military outpost, used since the times of Queen Teodolinda which watchtower is inside the walls and around the tower. A staircase in Sasso allows access through a drawbridge, to the main tower with the possibility to go on top which enjoys a unique view, 360 degrees, on Lake Como.
Out of the gate on the left opens a breathtaking scenery with a view on the lake of Como on a balustrade overhanging on Varenna. Toward the south a staircase leads to the garden of olive trees where you can meet the “falconer of the castle”. Dressed in historical costumes show viewers the predators of the castle: white owls, owls, buzzards and hawks, where you can also admire them in flight. Continuing along the trail, it goes back up to arrive at the entrance of the undergrounds, an outpost of the defensive line Cadorna (1915-1918), which was supposed to counteract any attempt of German invasion from the conca of Menaggio.
Climbed up from the underground takes you back to the boulevard in the gravel which leads to the outlet with the gardens that in summer offer enchanting flowers.
